Murrells Inlet, South Carolina’s Blessing of the Inlet

The 16th annual “Blessing of the Inlet” will take place at 11:30 a.m. on May 5, in Murrells Inlet and is hosted by the Belin Memorial United Methodist Church. The entire day is devoted to the festivities, beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. There will be over 60 arts and crafts vendors and awesome children’s events like face painting, a dunk tank, lots of fun kids’ inflatables, airbrush tattoos, pony rides, live bunnies and a climbing wall. Local Murrells Inlet restaurants will be preparing delicious dishes, and dancing, gospel choirs and Christian musicians will provide the entertainment. Handmade jewelry, original paintings, and of course, lots of seafood, chicken “bog” and miscellaneous wares will keep everyone busy.

It’s a full day of family-friendly events that focuses on celebrating the continued blessings showered onto Murrells Inlet and its residents. Bring your loved ones, bring your friends, and your appetite for a day of fellowship and fun. Admission is free. Parking is free.

Tea & Symphony at Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum

Celebrate Earth Day with Tea & Symphony, beginning at 1 p.m. on April 22, 2012 at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum on 3100 South Ocean Boulevard, in nearby Myrtle Beach. Stroll through the gallery, listen to the Long Bay Symphony Youth Orchestra and sample the teas and sweets. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Current exhibitions at the museum include the Horry-Georgetown County High Schools 11th Annual Juried Art Exhibit, illustrations by Barry Moser, Afghan photographs by Fardin Waezi, turned and sculpted wood and the William Jameson’s Woodland Textures exhibition. The museum has 10 galleries and is noted for its fine visual arts exhibits available year round. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Long Bay Symphony Youth Orchestra is an investment in the future of the arts. If you get a chance, come to the museum to support these fine young musicians.

Tickets are $35 per person, $20 of your ticket price is tax-deductible as a contribution benefiting The Long Bay Symphony and Youth Symphony as well as educational programming in local area schools.

Gold Key Jazz Festival – Myrtle Beach

Jazz has found a home in Myrtle Beach! The Gold Key Jazz Society is a non-profit organization that includes jazz enthusiasts from Horry, Georgetown, Marion, and Charleston counties that holds monthly jazz events throughout the Myrtle Beach area. April 27 through April 29 they will host The Gold Key Jazz Festival at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center located at 21st Street and Oak Avenue. This 3-day jazz journey features an impressive line up of great jazz musicians performing a combination of works from legendary artists and their own original music.

Friday night enjoy the sounds of the “Funk Show” with Tom Browne, Ronnie Laws, El Jaye Johnson, and Calvin Edwards Trio. Saturday includes a full line up with “Jazz At Its Finest” with T.S. Monk, Jr, Carrie Jackson, and Joey DeFrancesco featured for the evening performance and any students interested in music are encouraged to attend the Masters Class conducted by T.S. Monk and Joey De Francesco from 1:00-3:00. To wrap up a fabulous weekend of jazz, plan to attend Sunday’s gospel Jazz Brunch at 10:00am with the Dante Lewis Gospel Jazz Band and the Blues Award Ceremony with Bhakti Project and Ermitt ‘Mr. Blues’ Williams at 3:00pm.

Nothing spells spring like Easter. Colored eggs, special candies, fun and games with kids dressed in their favorite Easter garb hanging onto their festive baskets like they were gold. Easter is time for family get-togethers and what better place than the town of Surfside Beach, the “family beach.”

The Town of Surfside Beach will sponsor an Easter egg hunt from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2012, at the Huckabee Park Complex, 499 Spanish Oak Drive. Make it a day with an early spring picnic lunch before running the fields of dreams as your kids scramble for their prizes. Three age groups vie for plastic eggs on three different baseball fields hiding 1,000 eggs each. Better have your cameras ready to go since all 3,000 eggs were scooped up in about one minute last year! You don’t want to miss any of the fun! The kids then turn the eggs into a raffle for neat prizes like stuffed animals. Don’t think that candy isn’t part of the picture, too! Each child goes home with a nicely stuffed bag of sweets.

Myrtle Beach’s New Zip Line Adventures

There’s always something new happening in Myrtle Beach! Check out the latest attractions for this summer, which promise to get your adrenaline pumping. Thrill seekers will love getting their groove on with two new zip lines designed to shoot them 600 feet between two poles—heart-thumping fast. The project is called Myrtle Beach Adrenaline Adventures and will be located on the large lot that used to be the Myrtle Beach Pavilion on 9th Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard. The second course on South Ocean Boulevard will be called Ocean View Zipline Adventures. Thrusting at high speed across the beach with out-of-this-world views should send even the faint-hearted on a quest to seek his courage.

Construction on Adrenaline Adventures has already begun and both Myrtle Beach attractions are set to be finished by early spring. Both attractions should bring somewhere between 60 and 80 new seasonal jobs to the area, including zip line operators and office personnel. Talks for a third zip line slated for the Family Kingdom will take thrill seekers across the swash and go-kart track and back again at the start of Family Kingdom for a heart-pounding 800-foot trip. Keep Safe At The Beach

Whether you’re looking to relax and read a book, enjoy family-time building sand castles with the kids and searching for seashell treasures, cast a line into the surf from a pier or from the shore, or jump into the water to swim and play in the waves - you’ll quickly understand why Surfside Beach and Myrtle Beach beaches attract millions of visitors to their shore each year.

To keep your day at the beach a fun and enjoyable one, lifeguards are on duty along many of the Grand Strand beaches during the summer months. Inexperienced swimmers or families with children should make sure the beach area they visit is staffed by a lifeguard. Although most times the waters are very swimmable and the waves gentle, the beauty of the ocean on a calm day can be deceptive, so lifeguards will raise one of three colored beach safety flags to keep you aware of current swimming conditions. Here’s what those colored flags mean:

Yellow safety flag: A lifeguard is on duty
Blue safety flag: There is aquatic danger
Red safety flag: There is no swimming allowed

Look for, read, and obey all beach safety flags to ensure your day at the beach is spent safely, because you’ll want to head off the sandy shores later to enjoy some of the delicious cuisine found at our local area restaurants or take in one of the many attractions to complete your memorable day!

Myrtle Beach St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

Grab some Irish stew and a pint of your favorite beverage before settling in to the 2012 St. Patrick’s Day Celebration in downtown Myrtle Beach!

This year’s event features two stages of music all day long, including: Rusted Root, Trevor Hall, Band on the Rum and many more top bands. The main stage is set up on 8th Avenue North, the second stage—the Irish stage—along 11th Avenue North. Along Ocean Boulevard, authentic Irish food and spirits, vendors and boardwalk performances by the Dixieland Band and the Myrtle Beach Regional Pipe Band will set the mood and keep the Irish eyes smiling from the celebration’s noon opening to its 11 p.m. closing.

The young and the young-at-heart will jump at the chance to enjoy the alcohol-free “Kidz Zone” at Plyler Park complete with inflatables and games. The second stage is set next to the park so when the kids are finished jumping around you can set up a rest area and listen to great music!

A portion of the proceeds benefits the Horry County Special Olympics so head to downtown Myrtle Beach and spend the day celebrating green and shamrocks!
